An elderly man has died and three are seriously ill in hospital following an accident in central London after a five-ton lorry mounted the pavement to avoid an e-scooter.

The collision occurred when the scooter crossed at a junction towards Russell Square Gardens, forcing the delivery truck to swerve at 25mph.

Police are now trying to trace the e-scooter rider involved in the incident which happened at 10.10am this morning.

The accident has caused widespread congestion, closing the A4200 between Euston Station and High Holborn. It is unlikely to reopen today.

Supt Glenys Willson, head of the Serious Collision Unit, said: “We have spoken to some witnesses and the lorry driver, who is being treated for shock but is otherwise uninjured."

The man, who wore a black business suit, was described as about 30 with dark hair. He carried on towards Montagu Place without stopping.

Supt Willson said, “Although he was wearing headphones, we don’t believe he could have been unaware of the carnage caused by his criminal recklessness. We want to speak to him urgently. He, or anyone who can help us identify him, should contact us on 0207 230 1515.”
